Invalid characters when saving a file (Naming files)

There are a few characters that you cannot use when saving a file, this is standard for most types of file.

Note – This is very important for SharePoint as using invalid characters can cause major problems when syncing files which can result in costly data loss.

These invalid characters consist of:                         (but not exclusively in some cases)

  • Tilde ( ~ )
  • Hash ( # )
  • Percent ( % )
  • Ampersand ( & )
  • Asterisk ( * )
  • Braces ( {} )
  • Backslash ( )
  • Colon (:)
  • Angle brackets (<>)
  • Question mark (?)
  • Slash ( / )
  • Plus sign ( + )
  • Pipe ( | )
  • Quotation mark ( ” )

There are not many characters but they will/may cause problems (see below).

Please be careful when naming files as using these characters especially in Sharepoint as problems with syncing can occur and file updates/ edits may not be saved.

If you do use any invalid characters you may get an alert like:

save error

If so click “OK” and enter a name that does not include any invalid characters.
